How To Avoid a Dog Bite
The best thing to do is to slowly back away from the dog without looking into the dog's eyes. Keep an eye on the dog, but don't look directly at him.
..:::How To Pet
Q:I have a lab, rhidesian ridgeback that I adopted 2 1/2 weeks ago. Tonight we had a severe thunderstorm... he jumped into my bed and was panting heavy. I tried to calm him down without success. After about two hours.. I was searching the internet for a clue as to why he was doing this heavy panting. I do understand that panting help cool the dog. It has been humid lately, but temps have been in the low 70's. I also sleep with a ceiling fan. It took him about 45 mins. lying at my feet for him to stop the heavy panting. Is this an anxiety issue? Or is there something wrong? He has been having normal bowel movements... He is about 14 months old and has been neutered. I had him to the vet 2 days after I got him and he had all his shots, blood work and stool sample done... Everything was normal... Any thing I should worry about?
A:No, It's normal. Definately a typical anxiety episode.
Most animals are frightend of thunder storms.
Dogs also have a gift of sensing when danger coming, which leads them to the panting, they get nervious.
Poor pup, he'll get used to the storms, just reasurre him now that it's ok when the storms are going while he is young or else he'll always be afraid of them.
I had dogs when I was younger and after a tornado had gone through our property one day (just a few mintues after we had let them inside actually), ever since after that when a storm was coming we would know it because the dogs would freak out exactly like that and during the storm you couldn't calm them down at all... Poor guys.They remember trauma...they're pretty smart regardless of what some people may think of them.

A:As the other poster said this can be just do to anxiety... although, if this is a continual thing and happens with no apparent *scare* a vet visit is in order or if it continues on too long. Also, you mentioned trying to calm him down... what were you trying to do?? Let me know as you may have been inadvertently rewarding the behaviour.
