How To Stop Your Dog from Jumping
Keep the dog upright. This is the real trick in training your dog not to jump: holding both of her paws in each hand, keep her upright for several minutes until she becomes uncomfortable.

Make certain your puppies are dewormed. Ask your vet for the timetable to follow. Check the medical history for any new pets you acquire. If they haven’t been wormed, schedule it and get it done immediately.

Prevent your dog from eating fecal matter--theirs or another dog’s. It’s the most common way a dog gets internal parasites.

A healthy coat and immune system are good defenses against parasites. Feed your dog a natural, healthy diet (see How to Give Your Dog a Balanced Diet) and make sure it gets plenty of exercise.

Check your dog for ticks, especially during warm months. If you find any, carefully remove them with tweezers, being sure to get its entire body. Make checking a routine after any hiking or camping trips.

Give your dog its monthly heartworm “chew.” You can get them from your vet or order a supply online. And be sure your dog gets tested yearly to be heartworm clear.

Adult dogs need an annual fecal exam by your vet to check for internal parasites. Puppies need this more frequently. Though some dogs have symptoms, many don’t.

Your dog needs a flea collar almost all year round. It may not repel everything, but it sure helps.

Pay attention to any obvious skin irritation you dog gets. For “hot spots,” cut the hair away, swab it with witch hazel, rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, then pat it dry. Try aloe vera directly on it to cool it down.

Parasites can make your dog miserable. They’re also potentially deadly, so don’t ignore the signs. If you’re not sure what’s going on, a trip to the vet is the smart thing to do.
