How To Train Your Dog to Heel

Have your dog on your left side, facing the same direction as you. In your left hand hold food in front of your dog's nose.

Put your dog on a leash. It is MUCH easier to control the dog and collect a sample when the dog is at arm's length.

Take your dog outside to a favorite potty spot. If you have a male dog, he will probably lift his leg to mark a new area -- this is golden! Catch that stream of urine before it hits the ground.

If you have a female dog, you have more of a difficult task. I like to use a more rectangle or oval shaped tupperware dish when collecting a urine sample from my female. That way, you can hold one end safely while scooting the empty end underneath her.

Write down the time that you collected the sample. Your vet will ask you if the sample is fresh. Fresh is better! If you must, collect the sample and refridgerate it. REFRIDGERATE ONLY IF YOU CAN NOT TAKE THE SAMPLE IN RIGHT AWAY.

Take the sample to the veterinarian. The vet will want to know what symptoms you noticed -- accidents in the house, frequent urination, consuming large amounts of water, or anything else that may have triggered you to believe there is an issue. You know your dog best and you know what is "normal" and "abnormal."
