Place yourself behind the dog, gently massaging the back of his neck to calm him down. If necessary, you can kneel with the dog secured by your thighs so he does not run away.
Move your hands to rub his head and rub down from his eyes in the process, dislodging any debris.
If the debris is stubborn or sticky, follow up with a soft swipe from the damp washcloth.
Give the dog a treat for not biting you. If he did bite you, don't give him the treat.
