How To Dog Proof a House
Make sure all trash cans have lids. This is often the first thing dogs will make a beeline for when you leave.
..:::How To Pet
Evaluate why your dog's fur has static. Is the air in your house too dry? Maybe a humidifier would help. Is the static caused by your pet rolling on one particular rug? Maybe you could replace the rug. Sometimes the cause is beyond your control. The following strategies should help.

Find some hair styling lotion or cream, and apply a scant amount to your hands. Rub your hands together, and then gently pet your dog. Just as styling cream tames your own fly-aways, applying it to your dog's fur will also bring some relief to your pet.

Try some hand lotion. If you don't have any styling cream handy, maybe you have some hand lotion that would work. Again, rub a very small amount on your hands, and then gently pet your dog.

Most lotion has lanolin in it. Lanolin is what keeps sheep from having static!

Grab a fabric softener sheet. If styling cream or hand lotion aren't handy, a dryer sheet will accomplish the same job. This is actually my dog's favorite treat. He loves to be rubbed down with an anti-static sheet. His fur is all smooth and relaxed afterwards. He also usually smells pleasantly fresh.
