Don the disposable kitchen gloves.

Place the skunk odor-affected animal or person(this works on cats, dogs, horses, people and farm animals such as sheep and goats) in a shower stall, tub or outdoors on a grassy or dirt area where water runoff will not pose a problem.

If sensitive areas such as the eyes, nose or lips, have been affected, coat them with a liberal application of a petroleum-based jelly.

Using one box of baking soda per area of skunk oil, very liberally rub the baking soda into the haircoat, making sure to remain gloved, and paying special attention to areas that are visibly coated with the offending oil. If not sure of adequate baking soda penetration err on the side of using too much baking soda rather than not enough.

* Making sure that nothing gets into the eyes, nose and mouth of the "victim", carefully pour the vinegar directly onto all areas covered with the baking soda.

After the vinegar and baking soda stop reacting, immediately use the shower spray to rinse the coat and skin thoroughly with cool water. Hot water may actually encourage the oil to bind onto the hair shaft, so go as cool as is comfortable.

Allow the animal to drip dry, preferably outside in a draft-free area, but if inside, on a tile or otherwise, uncarpeted or rug-free floor. You can pat dry using an absorbent towel, but do not rub, as any residual oil will be rubbed into hair follicle and skin pores and will be very difficult to remove.
