Travel by Car with Your Dog

Put the halter on your small dog and leave it on, so that when you have to take your dog out of the carrier during your car trip, you can get the leash on him easily. For larger dogs, depending on the type of harness you buy it may double as a leash.

Place your dog in the carrier, along with his or her favorite pet blanket and the container of water. (If you have a hard-sided carrier, get the water bottles that will strap to the door.) For bigger dogs on a harness, put the blanket down in the seat or cargo area where they will be strapped in.

Secure your carrier, with your small dog inside, into your car. Be sure to read all the instructions. Do the same for your large dog and his harness.

Stop at rest areas that have designated pet areas. You need to get out and stretch your legs and use the restroom after a couple of hours in the car, and so will your dog.
