..:::How To Pet

If the Pet Has Passed Away

Tell your pet what it means to you. This can be done through speaking directly to it, or by writing it a letter. Though it may seem eerie at first, speaking to the actual animal shortly before it is moved to burial can give a sense of closure that.

Hold a wake. This event will give your mind and heart an opportunity to acknowledge the loss. Holding a wake to mourn your pet honors the role it played in your life.

Lay your pet to rest in a special place. If you can bury your pet in your backyard, mark the place with a stone or planting. Or consider framing a photograph of your pet.

If the Pet is Still Living

Tell your pet what it means to you. Though pets cannot understand our language, expressing your feelings will help build closure. You might also consider voicing the reasons for the change to help you work through any potential guilt.
Be sure that your pet is going to a safe and loving home. If you have to move away or give your pet up, knowing that it is safe and cared for will ease your anxiety and prevent any misgivings.
Make the transition clean. Drawing out your leaving can be as draining on your pet as on you. It’s likely that your pet will not realize you are gone for good until time has passed, so take advantage of this fact and leave as if nothing is changing.
