How to Teach your Dog and Cat to Become Friends

Introduce them to each other. Usually this will be the hardest step. You probably will want the help of a friend to restrain your dog while you introduce it to the cat. Do not let them scratch each other and do this often during the first few weeks. They will eventually calm at seeing each other after a while.

Restrain them while they get to know each other. As they get to know each other better, still be at an arms length just in case they try to get into it. Most often your cat will make an escape; cats are very nimble when it comes to getting away from a pesky pup.

Repeat this process. The two will learn to live together in harmony over time. Repetition is the key here.

Let them live together. Once you are satisfied that they are friends you can let them hang out unattended.
