Choose a dog you like. Just because it looks shaggy and unkept doesn't mean it's naturally like that. cleaning it up will make it look better and he/she will be healthier
Choosing the right dog here is important. Sometimes it's difficult to tell what the dog is really like. Being locked up all the time could make the dog a little mean. Find out if it is something that will change over time. The dog may also be scared. A previous owner could have beaten the dog and it could be very scared. But once being home for a while and being well taken care of, it will show it's real self.
When you get the dog home be sure it has a nice place to sleep close to you and praise it a lot. Once the dog warms up to the new environment it will be a lot nicer and lovable.
