How To Keep Dogs and Cats From Fighting

Give the cat her own safe area to escape to when she needs it and keep her food bowl and litter box in a separate area from the dog. It might be a good idea to keep it permanently blocked from the dog by a baby gate or door.

Get the cat's ATTENTION! You can do this by shaking a container of treats, or maybe by making that weird noise with your mouth that everyone seems to make when they want to get an animal's attention. I can't really describe it more than that, except to say that I know you know what I mean, and also that it's kind of like a mix between the noise a squirrel makes and clucking.

Once the cat is looking at you, speak softly and look at the ground, NOT at your cat's eyes! It may feel THREATENED as though you are trying to make it submit through threatening eye contact (much like people, only more so!). The key here is for you to be submissive to your cat and for you to let it sense that. Then it will be able to approach you and sense that you love it and rub you back. Remember not to try this on *WILD* cats such as pumas (also known as cougars, or mountain lions) or lions etc because that is crazy and even if you think you love them they are wild animals and it is cruel to do anything to take away their wildness even if you are doing it out of love.
